Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto – a significant Catholic pilgrimage site visited by nearly 6 million pilgrims each year – was digitally documented by CyArk and Organization & Networks (ON) on January 29th, 2013.

ON is a design/build office that provides architectural design and construction for projects with cultural, religious, and social significance. Last summer, ON proposed a prayer sanctuary for the Catholic Diocese of Cheong-ju, South Korea featuring a detailed, accurate one-to-one scale (life size) replica of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. As the project manager for this effort, it was my job to figure out how.

While there are dozens, if not hundreds, of replicas of the Grotto all over the world, the goal of our effort is to manufacture the most realistic replica ever created – showing every contour, texture, crevice and detail within 3mm accuracy of the actual Grotto. This is why ON selected laser scanning technology and how ON and CyArk partnered to generate an accurate 3D model of Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto.

CyArk and ON began discussing our project requirements late last year and I found it extremely helpful to have CyArk’s expertise guiding us to realize our project goals. Over the course of several weeks, we exchanged numerous emails, phone calls, and a face to face meeting to solidify the project plan. This collaborative process enabled us to agree on a project scope that was both feasible in budget, schedule, and scale.

On the day of fieldwork, I met with CyArk’s Scott Lee and partners Erwin Christofori and Dirk Haeusleig from Christofori Und Partner of Germany. We first met with the Lourdes authorities, then surveyed the site, beginning the fieldwork later in the afternoon. The first phase of the project was panoramic photography, whereby the entire façade of the Grotto was photographed from a dozen different perspectives.

The second phase was the 3d scanning led by Christofori Und Partner and using Leica’s Phased-based HDS7000 scanner. The team used calibration targets throughout the scan to ensure that the point cloud data would be integrated with millimeter accuracy. While Christofori Und Partner was focused on the Grotto itself, Scott used CyArk's Faro Focus3D scanner to capture point cloud data of the Rosary Basilica above the Grotto, capturing the scale and beauty of the entire sanctuary. Due to the team’s expertise, combined with the advanced laser scanning equipment, the scanning was completed in one single evening with minimal disruption to the pilgrims.

Though the data will be used to replicate the Grotto in South Korea, the data will also be donated to the Lourdes Sanctuary for maintenance and repair of the Grotto. In fact, the data could not have come at a better time for the Sanctuary. Just 3 months prior to our work, the Sanctuary was severely damaged by flooding in the area. Though the Grotto was spared from major damage, it was a frightening reminder of the fragility of the Lourdes Grotto and other treasured heritage sites all over the world. As a Catholic and someone who has had the privilege to work with the Catholic Church, it was fulfilling to digitally preserve one of Catholicism's most revered pilgrimage sites for our future generations.

On behalf of ON, I would like to say thanks to everyone from CyArk – Scott Lee, Elizabeth Lee, Tom Greaves, Doug Pritchard, and Nancy Topp - and Christofori Und Partner’s Erwin Christofori and Dirk Haeusleig for their amazing help! We are excited about the future of heritage preservation and we are looking forward to collaborating with CyArk again!
