Afro-Brazilian History in Ouro Preto

CyArk traveled to Eastern Brazil in the fall of 2023 to document two sites in the town of Ouro Preto, Brazil’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Ouro Preto is threatened by the impacts of climate change, and CyArk partnered with local organization IEDS and the Federal University of Ouro Preto to complete 3D documentation of a gold mine and a baroque church being impacted by landslides. During the project, CyArk also recorded interviews with community members about the untold stories of Afro-Brazilian and indigenous miners. The project resulted in highly accurate records of these places and an educational experience built on CyArk’s Tapestry platform highlighting the stories of these miners.
