Rorke's Drift

South Africa
Project Resources

The Battle of Rorke's Drift, fought on 22 January 1879, was one of the most famous battles of the Anglo-Zulu War. Fought between the Victorian army, under Lt. John Chard, and the Zulu army, under Chief Cetshwayo, the Battle of Rorke's Drift was preceded by the British invasion of Zululand led by commander-in-chief Lord Chelmsford. Though the Zulu forces surprised the British in strength and number at the Battle of Isandlwana, the British defense of the Rorke's Drift mission post held.

The legacy of Rorke's Drift endures today and the site remains culturally significant for all affected by the Anglo-Zulu War. The battlefield site itself, located 46 km southeast of Dundee, hosts the Rorke's Drift Battle Museum, which has acquired international acclaim for its renditions and displays of the Anglo-Zulu War.

Digital documentation data and multimedia from the Rorke's Drift project, a partnership project between CyArk, the African Conservation Trust, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Heritage KwaZulu-Natal, will soon be available on CyArk's website.
