Templo Mayor

Mexico
Project Resources

Templo Mayor was the principal sites of Tenochtitlan, the former capital of the Aztec empire. The twin temples, which sit atop a large pyramid, are dedicated to the war god Huitzilopochtli and the rain god Tlaloc. Templo Mayor served as a religious, political and cultural center for the Aztec Empire. Templo Mayor was destroyed by the Spanish in 1521 C.E. and the ruins were buried and largely forgotten until their rediscovery in the 1970’s.
